What is the science of Incubation ?
Incubation means maintaining favorable conditions for the development and hatching of fertilized eggs. In the artificial incubation of eggs, four factors are most important: temperature, humidity, ventilation, and rotation.Extensive research has shown that the optimal incubator temperature is 100°F with a relative humidity of 60%, air containing 21% oxygen and 0.5% carbon dioxide, and an air velocity past the eggs of 12 cubic feet per minute.
How to get better results from incubation ?
Four factors are most important to get good results from incubation
1. Temperature
2. Humidity
3. Ventilation
4. Rotation
1.Temperature
The incubator temperature should be between 99°F and 101°F. The acceptable range is 97° to 102°F. A high mortality rate is observed when the temperature drops below 96°F or rises above 103°F for some time. Eggs may fail to hatch if the temperature stays in extreme temperatures for several days. Overheating is more important than overheating. Operating the incubator for 15 minutes at 105°F will severely affect the embryos.
2. Humidity
The relative humidity in the incubator should be 60% for the first 18 days. During the last three days (incubation period), the relative humidity should be around 65-70%. Excessive moisture in an incubator prevents normal evaporation and reduces hatch, but excess moisture is rarely a problem in small incubators. Too little moisture can cause chicks to stick to their shells and cripple them during incubation.
3. Ventilation
Best incubation results are usually obtained using normal air containing 21% oxygen. Getting too much oxygen is difficult, but a deficiency is possible. Eggs and chicks can be suffocated by placing them in airtight containers.
4. Rotation
Inverting the eggs during incubation prevents the embryos from migrating through the egg white and sticking to the shell. Eggs should be turned over 3 to 5 times daily from day 2 to day 18. Don’t turn the eggs over for the last three days!
